Every W-Space system has at least 1 "static" wormhole. This is the Wormhole that when you close it, or it naturally closes at the end of its life, respawns the same type Wormhole in your W-Space system. It does not lead to the same place everytime, just the same class of system (ie High Sec, Low Sec, Class 2 etc). These will always have the same name - like B274 is a High Sec out of a Class 2 system. This means you can control the "outbound" side of this wormhole. Control by either not spawning it (not warping to grid), or once spawing it, closing it when done with it.
Now the dreaded K162's. These are "Inbound" wormholes that have been spawned from somewhere else into your beloved W-Space system. These are bad for a number of reasons, but the worst is that someone spawned it , which means there is activity on the other end. Best case its somebody looking for a way out and was at the end of a long chain and probably will not be trouble. Worst case is its an active PVP corp looking for you mining. Anyway these are dangerous holes and once you close them they are gone forever (the static, outbound end respawns in their system, but not its connection to you).
There is a third class fo transient Wormholes where you will have the non-K162 end and spawn it on your end, but it disappears once used. These are fewer, but they do exist.
So good Wormhole Management means closing the bad K162's and closing your static wormholes when they are not needed. If you do that, then you can "know" that there is no way in at that time. However at any moment a K162 could open, which is why you should be continually looking at the number of Cosmic Sigs in your system.
Hope that helps.

Because I can see jumping a BS out of the WH, planning on coming back in the K162, only to find they collapsed it coming out and are now stuck in some random place.
That's the problem.
WHs burn mass both coming and going, so you really just have to hope you are on the proper side on that final pass.
If you really want to get down to it, you can try and calculate the exact mass you're transiting, and how much the WH can take, and try to get just enough. This is rather easily accomplished by carrying extra Plates and an AB.
As some have said, the best bet is to get it on the verge of collapse, and hope it keeps anyone from wanting to wander through. |
